Charles Livermore Memorial Scholarship

Family and friends established the Charles H. Livermore History Scholarship in 1986 to perpetuate the memory of Dr. Charles Livermore, an extraordinary teacher, scholar, and administrator. Dr. Livermore was a professor of history and chairman of the Social Sciences Department of Western Colorado University.

Dr. Livermore died in 1980 while serving as the chair of the history department. He came to Western Colorado University in 1969 and was very committed to both this college and this community. Dr. Livermore was a fine third baseman for a fast-pitch softball team, a leading bass in barbershop quartets and choruses, and the chairman of the Gunnison County Democrats.

Since his death, many of his former students said that he was one of their favorite professors. The sign on his office door for many years read “History is everything; everything is History.” Some colleague added, “History is History; Livermore is Livermore.”
