Scott & Monica Newman Accounting Scholarship

Dr. Scott and Dr. Monica Newman, Emeritus Professors of Accounting, were the heart and soul of the Accounting Program graduating approximately 400 students. Scott was a faculty member from 1989 until 2015 while Monica served from 1990 until 2015. Monica also served as Chair of the Department of Business, Accounting, and Economics for 12 years and was the driving force behind the beautiful Borick Business Building. Scott maintained an educational news and analysis website for many years that benefited many at Western and Monica, through the VITA program, provided free tax assistance to the Gunnison Valley for many years. Both Scott and Monica served on numerous campus committees. Much of the time Monica was the “tax” teacher and made the subject fun and interesting and Scott taught Intro to Accounting, Accounting I and II, and Advanced Accounting.

Scott and Monica both retired in May, 2015. Monica passed away at her home in June, 2015, surrounded by people she loved and who loved her. Monica’s integrity, expertise and professional perspectives were much sought after by students and colleagues; however, it was her love, friendship and humor that will leave the largest hole in the community and her family. Scott passed away in May, 2017. Scott was an independent avid reader and researcher of markets and financial trends, and health and fitness. Scott will be missed for his extreme intelligence and excitement for teaching shown through writing his own tests and texts for his classes. Scott forged friendships with students who enjoyed the same topics as him by sharing those interests, mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, and his amazing mind for quantitative investment strategy.
