The Dan Tredway Memorial Education Scholarship was established by Dan’s family to provide scholarship assistance to seniors obtaining an Education Licensure at Western Colorado University. Friends of Dan have also generously contributed to this meaningful scholarship. This scholarship serves to honor Dan Tredway, a professor of Education at Western for 35 years and beloved Gunnison community leader and member.
Dan began teaching in a two room rural school in southeastern Kansas. Perhaps that is why his heart was always in tune with rural education. He felt that quite often urban areas were more affluent and because of the number of students perhaps could offer more opportunities for their students. He was always interested in seeing that the preparation of teachers in the rural areas was geared to the unique opportunities they would encounter. So while Dan also taught at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and New Mexico University, he truly loved living on the western slope of Colorado, his teaching experiences at Western Colorado University, and all the outstanding educators he became associated with during his tenure in Gunnison.
The Tredway family would like to pass on Dan’s commitment to a student from western Colorado. This scholarship to a senior will hopefully give them a start on their student teaching experience. The family is confident Dan would say to them, “you can do this successfully and I’m sure you will become a fine teacher.”Â
