William Dorgan Memorial Scholarship

The William E. Dorgan Memorial Scholarship was established by Dorgan’s daughter, Roberta (76), and her husband, Dennis Beckman for students majoring in Math. This scholarship serves to celebrate the memory of William E. Dorgan who passed away in 1996, and who served Western Colorado University as an outstanding member of the Math faculty. Roberta and Dennis believed a scholarship in his honor would be an ideal way to celebrate his memory.

William Dorgan loved math, education, and his students. In 29 years of teaching math at Western, Mr. Dorgan never missed one day of class or one hour of student tutorial time! This scholarship is a tribute to his life work, which his daughter wanted to continue.

When Dorgan began teaching, computers were so large it took whole rooms to contain the capacity that now fits on your wrist. Roberta and Dennis work for NASA where, of course, they couldnt do what they do without computers.

The message of encouragement for the recipient of this scholarship is:

Education is the best investment you can make in yourself. Mathematics is a fundamental component of any education, not only as a tool for other disciplines, but also as a logical way of thinking.
