Bus Riders Football Scholarship

The Bus Riders Football Scholarship was established by members of the 1950 Football Team to provide scholarship assistance to Western Colorado University student-athletes participating on the WCU Football Team. This scholarship serves to honor the 1950 Football Team members who survived a bus ride over Monarch Pass towards Salida when the brakes on their bus failed. The harrowing events made national news, and these men have maintained a bond for life, both from their experience of riding the bus down Monarch Pass, as well as their time together as football players at WCU.

As the school bus was racing down the mountain without brakes, the driver disregarded the few cries to run it into the side of the mountain. The driver told the team to shift their weight from side to side to compensate for the centrifugal force of each curve in the road. The message from the team coming together and surviving may well be applied to all human endeavors!

This scholarship is more than simply a gift to provide financial aid. This scholarship is an investment in you and the dividends will be all that you become. You are more than a scholarship recipient, you are part of a legacy in making the world a better place.

We hope that one day you will be in a position to enjoy helping students and create your own legacy!
