James Irwin Memorial Scholarship

James Irwin Memorial Scholarship has been established by family and friends to provide scholarship assistance to full time Western Colorado University students. This scholarship serves to honor and memorialize a man greatly admired by family and friends as a master woodworker; who is credited with inspiring and teaching many students to seriously pursue the art; and to reward students who demonstrate the qualities: meticulous attention to detail and constant determination to do their best, which characterized the life and career of Jim Irwin. One very prominent example of his skill as a woodworker is the faculty mace, which is carried by the faculty marshal in all WCU commencement exercises. Mr. Irwin was a professor of industrial arts at Western Colorado University for 26 years, from 1961 through 1987. He died in a tractor accident in 1991 near his Crawford home while he was collecting wood.

This scholarship is more than simply a gift to provide financial aid. It is a message of encouragement that donors believe in you, your gifts and talents and your bright future. This scholarship is an investment in you and the dividends will be all that you become. You are more than a scholarship recipient, you are part of a legacy in making the world a better place. We hope that one day you will be in a position to enjoy helping students and create your own legacy!
