Dr. Mason & Betty Light Scholarship
Dr. Mason Light, who served the college community for over forty years while he was a practicing physician in Gunnison, and his wife, Betty, established this scholarship for juniors and seniors who are engaged in Pre-Medical studies.
Dr. Light graduated from Colorado University Medical School in 1939. He came to Gunnison to practice in 1942. That began a nearly 60 years love affair with the Gunnison country. When the Light’sfirst came to Gunnison, they lived in Coronado Hall on the WCU Campus. Dr. Light delivered over 2,800 babies and took care of thousands of patients. He retired in 1979 and did volunteer work with refugees in Hong Kong, Sudan, The Philippines, and Thailand. He also helped the Indian Health Services for several years.
Mason was very involved in community affairs. He was an Eagle Scout, photographer, voracious reader, lover of classical music, Rotary member for over 50 years, member of the Elks and Masons, was a great fly fisherman, Skipper of the Gunnison Navy (a social fishing group), an avid skier, 4-wheeler and golfer. In 1963, the Gunnison Chamber of Commerce selected Mason as the Man of the Year.
Mason was a great friend of Western Colorado University. He and Betty established this scholarship in 1989. Mason was also President of the WCU Foundation Board in 1984-1985. Mason got an Honorary Degree from the college in 1989, Friend of the College Award at Homecoming 1996 and “Key to the College” award in 2000. Betty is a 1961 Western Colorado University graduate. Betty always felt that Western Colorado University was a very positive influence on the community and found it gratifying to help aid a student going into the health field. Mason passed away in 2001. Betty passed away in 2019.
The Light’s daughter, Patty Hayes, comments “This scholarship is a way to keep alive the memory of two very special people to whom Western meant a great deal. The hope for the students who receive this award is that they would have the integrity and dedication, love of mankind and nature that Dr. and Mrs. Light exemplified!”
