Hugo A Ferchau Memorial Scholarship

Family and friends established this scholarship to honor Dr. Ferchau for the never-ending assistance he gave to the students at Western. It is awarded to students who pursue studies and/or research in the area of Botany and native plant research. It was important to the Ferchau family, that their dad be remembered for his commitment and devotion to the students he taught and the passion he had for his field of study.

Dr. Ferchau was an integral part of Western’s science faculty for 31 years. He was frequently called upon in the community and region to provide his expertise in botany, especially his special knowledge of the reclamation of high-altitude mining sites.

When he and his family arrived in Gunnison in August 1962, he brought degrees from William and Mary, (51), Washington State University, (53), and Duke University (59) and several years teaching experience. In March 1988, Ferchau was formally inaugurated as the first occupant of the college’s Thornton Chair in Biology. He served in that capacity until 1990.

At the time of his official retirement from the university, about 30 former students returned to the campus to participate in a series of scientific forums in which they reported on their current research. They also joined in the dedication of the Thornton Gardens, which includes the Hugo A. Ferchau Greenhouse, located at the northwest corner of the campus.

At the time of his retirement, he was quoted as saying, “I’ve had a great career at Western. Given the chance, Id do little different. I’ve always enjoyed doing what had to be done. I’m thankful to be able to say that.” Dr. Ferchau passed away in 1993.

The family hopes that the recipients will embrace their studies with a curious mind and total commitment " and have fun doing it!
