Samuel William Roch Memorial Scholarship

The Samuel William Nathaniel Roch Memorial Scholarship has been established by Stephen Roch and Lorie Moreno-Roch, both are Western Colorado University alumni, in memory of their beloved son Samuel, to provide scholarship assistance to cross country and track and field student athletes at Western Colorado University.

Samuel William Nathaniel Roch died only twenty days after his birth. This scholarship is a way for Steve and Lorie to remember their son by allowing them to give to an organization that means so much to them both. Steve and Lorie feel that WCU is a very special place; the couple even met while students at Western.

Steve and Lorie are particularly fond of the athletic programs and have a loyalty to Coach Duane Vandenbusche. Both consider Coach Vandenbusche to be like a father. “Without him, I couldn’t have achieved the success I have. He would have done anything for anyone. He helped me realize my dreams,” said Lorie, who was a two-time National Champion and a seven-time All American for WCU. “I love the Athletic program, and we would do anything to support it,” continued Lorie.

Establishing the scholarship “is a way for Sam’s name to be out there”, people will know he was alive," explained Steve. “It’s a way to tell the world our son was here. And it’s a way to give to Western.”
