Lloyd Buswell Memorial Scholarship of the Arts

The Lloyd Buswell Memorial Scholarship of the Arts has been established by Carol Buswell to
provide scholarship assistance to Western Colorado University students pursuing art, music or
the performing arts. This scholarship serves in memory of Carol’s husband, Lloyd Buswell,
nicknamed “Buzz”. From 1974-1978 at Western, Lloyd earned his BA in Industrial Arts and
Education and Carol got her degree in Elementary Education.

Must be a full-time student
Must be pursuing a major or minor in art, music or the performing arts.
Must have financial need

It was incredibly important to Lloyd to finish school, he believed it was his education that gave
him the confidence he needed that led him to live the career he did. Immediately after completing
college, he moved to Baker City, Oregon to teach Industrial Arts and Wrestling at a Junior High
School. After three years, he joined IATSE Local 44 in 1981, Los Angeles’s Propmaker Union.
His career took off, eventually becoming head of construction at Paramount, Lloyd worked as a
welding foreman, propmaker, construction foreman, and in special effects for a long list of
movies and TV series including, “The Incredible Shrinking Woman” (1981), “The Best Little
Whorehouse in Texas” (1982), “Goonies” (1985), “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” (1986),
“Charlie’s Angels” (2000), “Matilda” (1996), and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement"
(2004).
After retiring in 2004, he decided to continue his carpentry work at Northshore School District in
Bothel, WA before retiring again in 2014.
