- “Umwelt”, the German word for “environment,” is more scientifically referred to as an animal’s specific sensory ability to experience its world. A bat, an Orca, a dolphin all echolocate. A butterfly uses the knobbed-shaped ends of its antennae and feet to smell flowers. The eye of an insect has thousands of facets, abating its ability to focus on any one thing, but rather allowing a mosaic way of seeing. Even “eyes” atop its head sense a change in light, perhaps a detection of a predator. Each participant in the animal kingdom perceives its Umwelt, but most likely has no sense of how other inhabitants perceive their Umwelt. How do you perceive your Umwelt? In a descriptive essay using standard English accentuated with vivid verbs and unique adjectives, describe how the one sense you value most helps you perceive your Umwelt. As you perceive your world, what do you do with that information? Write in a way that conveys a special feeling anyone could understand. In the last paragraph, explain why your view has special meaning to you. No word limit.
