Bob Decker Basketball Scholarship

Bob and Jean Decker established this scholarship in 1997 to assist basketball players. They wanted to help students be successful both in the classroom and on the basketball court.

Bob played on the Air Force basketball team, the CU basketball team which placed third in the 1955 Final Four tournament and graduated CU with a degree in education in 1957.

He began teaching high school math and coaching football and basketball in 1957 in Las Animas, CO and led his basketball team to state championship victories in 1958 and 1959. He and Jean married in 1959 and later had three daughters. Bob earned his master’sdegree in education and counseling at WCU in 1961. He had success in teaching and coaching in Longmont following this and served as the president of the Colorado High School Coaches Association in 1965.

In 1967, Bob became the basketball coach for 10 years and an assistant professor at WCU for 23 years, receiving emeritus status in 1988. During this time he held many different positions within the college and for related organizations, and was inducted into WCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. He was also a very active community member, including serving on the city council and as mayor of Gunnison.

Bob passed away on December 25, 2009. Bob and Jean wanted to encourage you, as the recipient, to pursue your educational and athletic goals and continually hope that their support will provide additional motivation to you.
