Ann Zugelder established this fund for Western students pursuing certification in Elementary Education.
Mrs. Zugelder’s life-long love for education and learning began in the early 1900’s as a student in Monroe County, Iowa, and has continued throughout her life. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in School Supervision from the University of Iowa. She came to Gunnison in 1927 as a first grade teacher. In 1953, she earned an MA from Western Colorado University. Her teaching career spanned thirty years, beginning at age 17 and ending at age 66. As an elementary teacher, a homemaker, and as a public-spirited citizen, Ann Zugelder was an outstanding representative of the Gunnison Country. She passed away in June 2004.
In 1974, the Gunnison County Chamber of Commerce named her “Citizen of the Year” for her work done in planning and building of the new library. Her leadership and many years of work with the public library were recognized when Gunnison County named its library “The Ann Zugelder Public Library” in 1985.
This scholarship is intended to recognize excellence in scholarship, leadership, and citizenship for a Western Colorado University student.
