JW and Joan Campbell Memorial Scholarship
The J.W. Campbell Memorial Wrestling Scholarship has been established by family and friends to provide scholarship assistance to Western Colorado University student-wrestlers. This scholarship serves to honor J.W., a long-time Gunnison resident and staff member of Western Colorado University who passed away on March 29, 2000.
J.W. had a relationship with Western’s athletes through his 25+ years as Sports Information Director. However, he and Joan, who passed away March 1, 2011, developed a special bond with the wrestling team and had a sincere appreciation of what kind of people the wrestlers and their coaches are; giving, self-less, and possessing strong work ethics. They often had the wrestlers help with projects around their home and ranch property. They traveled with the wrestlers for several seasons including a trip to South Dakota for the National Tournament.
After careful consideration, it seemed fitting to help a wrestler, especially one with an interest in the English language, considering J.W. had a love for and a gift with words.
J.W., who was known for his eternal cheerfulness and humble spirit, often gave this piece of advice that he lived by:
