#74 Winant Family Scholarship

The #74 Winant Family Scholarship has been established by Mike and Barb Winant to provide scholarship assistance to Western Colorado University students.

Mike attended Western from 1964 to 1968. He was a four-year football letterman wearing jersey #74 and was selected to the RMAC All-Conference team for three years as an offensive tackle. Mike was Co-Captain his senior year. The Mountaineer football Team won three RMAC football championships in 1964, 1965, and 1966. In 1968, Mike was signed as a free agent by the Denver Broncos.

Mike (‘68) met his wife, Barb (’69), while both attending Western. Mike and Barb both majored in Education. Barb was selected to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges” in 1969.

Western and the football program enabled the Winant family to be who and what they are today. Mike had a 45-year career in education as a coach, teacher, and administrator. Barb was a Spanish and Social Studies teacher for 40 years, as well.

The entire Winant family realizes the importance and impact Western had on their lives, “it seems only fitting that we give back, in some way, for what Western provides for us!” said Mike.

“Our hope is that the recipient of this scholarship enjoys Western as much as we did and will always remember the influence and memories Western had in their life.” said Mike and Barb.
