James D Nauman Environmental Studies Scholarship

The James D. Nauman Environmental Studies Scholar has been established by James D. Nauman to provide scholarship assistance to Environmental Studies majors who have made a significant contribution towards environmental stewardship while at Western.

Dr. Nauman knew what he wanted when he came to Gunnison from Denver to attend Western Colorado University. “I went to Western for the pre-med program,” he said. “Western had a good record of pre-med students being accepted and I knew from the beginning what I wanted to do.” Nauman came to Western in 1945 but was called to military service. He returned in 1947 and in 1949, even though he had not yet graduated from Western, was accepted in the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Western was instrumental in helping Nauman achieve his goal of becoming a physician. James Nauman passed away on December 22, 2018.

Nauman said he had wanted to do something for the college for some time since Western had been so valuable to him. Several faculty members who were important to him included Reinhardt Schuhmann, C.R. Walker, Clarence Rockwell, Ada Kansgen and C.T. Hurst.
