Richard and Belva Moyle Geology Scholarship
The Richard W. and Belva R. Moyle Geology Scholarship has been established by Richard Moyle and his wife, Belva, to provide scholarships and needs assistance to Geology students at Western Colorado University. Richard taught as an Assistant Professor of Geology at Western Colorado University from 1961 to 1965. He was the only faculty member in Geology. Belva received her BA degree in 1965 in Elementary Education and did her student teaching while in Gunnison.
Because of the Moyle’s love for teaching and the interaction with students they had a desire to financially assist students pursuing a degree in Geology (possibly with an interest in Teaching). Richard and Belva enjoyed their time at Western and appreciated the quality, friendship, teaching methods, and laboratory techniques of their faculty peers. They welcomed the caring and congenial environment for teaching, and the interaction with the students, especially those in Geology.
The Moyles want the recipients of their scholarship to have some help and relief with the burden of the cost of attending college. Thus, enabling you to have more time to concentrate on making better grades, broadening your excellence and expertise in your educational experience. Their message of inspiration for you is to encourage you to excel in your career with positive experiences especially in nature and the out of doors (field trips and projects). Learn to enjoy and be happy in what you do, because they believe this is the reward of a successful career.
This scholarship was established to be awarded to a hard working worthy student that wants to contribute to the Geosciences and Earth Science Teaching. It is not just for the high academically prepared student, but also for those that have a desire and the potential to do well and have a financial need. Both Richard and Belva, by their experiences in teaching, know that there are students that can and will be excellent teachers in the work place even though they are not a straight 4.0 in their grades. As an example, an excellent field trip leader with caring, kindness and patience can reap excellent results from his/her students at the teaching moment as well as develop a life long friendly relationship between mentor and student.
The quotes that capture the spirit of this scholarship are:
“Do your best with your time in training and you shall reap the rewards of happiness and productivity in your chosen career.”
This scholarship will be awarded for the Summer Geology Field Camp.
