Charles Gerhardt Memorial Scholarship

The Charles Gerhardt Memorial Scholarship was established by Edward and Virgil Gerhardt in memory of their son, Charles. Charles was a senior English major and died in an automobile accident shortly before spring commencement. Charles was considered one of the most active and well-liked students on campus and many contributions to this scholarship have come from his friends from the class of 1977.

The May 6, 1977 issue of the Top Of the World described Gerhardt as an active, enthusiastic and intelligent young man who in his quiet and positive manner, made Western Colorado University a better place. During his years at WCU he served as a writer and cartoonist for the Top; as the Student Senate representative from the Arts and Humanities; as president of the Student Union Activities Council; was in the Quigley Club; and worked with the film arts series.

This award of this scholarship to current students perpetuates the memory of Charles Gerhardt as a symbol to other young men and women of outstanding achievement continuing the tradition of excellence at Western. Through his enthusiasm, intelligence, and desire to be of service, he has left a lasting impression on Western Colorado University.
